Today, at Our Oceans Conference in Bali, Indonesia, my colleagues at Vulcan released the Allen Coral Atlas.

At the moment, the Atlas includes a satellite-based global photomosaic of Earth's coral reefs, with a resolution of about 12 feet per pixel, and the first detailed maps of five coral reefs, where we are testing automated processes for classifying the satellite images.

In the last 2 weeks, we had to endure the death of two critical members of our team:
Microsoft co-founder and philanthropist Paul Allen, who funded its creation, and Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology director Dr. Ruth Gates, one of the project's lead scientists.

I want to celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of Paul and Ruth. So I'm sharing the release news with you.
