In this time of mostly bad news for corals and the world, I wanted to share
this opportunity to hear about some things that are actually going in the
right direction - the Smithsonian 2020 Virtual Earth Optimism Summit (
https://earthoptimism.si.edu/). Topics range from climate to food to
finance to oceans, and speakers include young activists,
boots-on-the-ground conservationists, artists and filmmakers, scientists,
journalists, political and business leaders. Several coral reef scientists
are featured (Enric Sala, Emily Pidgeon, Davey Kline, Mary Hagedorn, David
Smith), as are major figures in climate change science, policy and activism
(Christiana Figures, Katharine Hayhoe, Jonathan Foley, Bill McKibben, Jamie
Margolin). Think of it as a free Master Class in saving the planet.

The summit had to transition to virtual quite quickly so some programming
is still being loaded, but the website schedule is mostly complete at this
point. It launches with film night Wednesday April 22 (the 50th anniversary
of Earth Day) at 6pm EDT (also continuing at 8pm EDT Thursday and Friday).
Live broadcast begins with a soft start 11:30 am EDT Thursday and Friday,
with formal programming beginning at noon EDT. The live programming also
can be seen Saturday and Sunday as a rebroadcast, and there will be
rebroadcasts to align with time zones around the world as well.

Schedule at: https://earthoptimism.si.edu/calendar/2020-dc-summit/
Speakers at: https://earthoptimism.si.edu/calendar/2020-dc-summit/speakers/

PLEASE SHARE WITH YOUR FRIENDS, COLLEAGUES, STUDENTS, AND FAMILY
