Dear colleagues:

We would like to draw your attention to a meeting session on:

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for Coastal Flood Hazard Risk Reduction - Current State of Knowledge and Future Guidance

at the 2024 AGU Ocean Sciences Meeting, which is being held 18-23 February 2024 in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.

If your work is relevant to this session, please submit an abstract to the Coastal and Estuarine Hydrodynamics and Sediment Processes’ topic session CP007 via the following link:

Session Description:

Coastal flooding and erosion during storms affect thousands of vulnerable coastal communities. Coastal habitats, including coral reefs, oyster reefs, salt marshes, and mangroves, protect coastal communities by dissipating wave energy and often trapping sediment. Many of these habitats also sustain significant ecological diversity and support valuable tourist and fishery industries. However, as coastal habitats become increasingly degraded, there is growing concern over their ability to provide these benefits into the future. Nature-based solutions (NbS), including green, grey-green, and hybrid approaches, may be able to not only contribute to habitat recovery, but also reduce coastal hazards and thus increase the resiliency of many coastal communities.

One major limitation to advancing the use of NbS for coastal resilience has been the lack of rigorous, quantitative assessments of their physical and ecological performance. This session focuses on advancements in understanding the role natural habitats in coastal flood hazard risk reduction, including but not limited to: the role of organism spacing in boundary-layer hydrodynamics, the siting of NbS implementation to best reduce coastal flooding, adaptive evolution of habitat-forming species to be more resilient to stressors, the ecological connectivity between adjacent restored sites, and analyses of NbS costs relative to hazard risk reduction benefits.
