Our Spiny Lobster Research Program at Florida Fish and Wildlife is hiring an Associate Research Scientist at our lab in Marathon, FL. We are seeking candidates with a s strong background in scientific research and data analysis that are also capable of scientific diving and boat handling. MS or PhD in a physical/natural sciences field with experience is preferred. Candidates are required to present a seminar on their relevant research and experience. Examples of data science/analysis code are also encouraged.

Minimum Qualifications:
8 years professional experience in a closely-related biological field or laboratory is required.
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and four years of professional experience in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics; or A master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and three years of professional experience as described above; or A doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences or mathematics and one year of professional experience as described above can substitute for the required experience.



Preferred Qualifications:
Preference may be given to applicants with a strong background in data analyses; applicants with at least two (2) peer-reviewed publications of which as least one (1) is a lead authori; applicants who can demonstrate proficiency in statistics and coding in relevant programs (e.g., R, python, etc.); or applicants with a proven records in applying for and obtaining grant funding.



Requirements:
Employment in this position is contingent upon a successful Level 1 background check at no cost to the candidate prior to hire date.

Note:  Candidates selected for interviews are expected to present a seminar of their relevant research and experiences.  Travel expenses to the interview are the candidate's responsibility.  Candidates are also encouraged to submit an example of data science/analysis code with their applciation materials.



Position Overview and Responsibilities:
This position serves as a project lead in the spiny lobster research program, and designs and conducts lobster monitoring and research activities in the Florida Keys region. Primary responsibilities include leading and participating in the field data collection. Collect data on distribution, abundance, size structure, growth, and other population characteristics and fisheries issues using above water and underwater sampling techniques. Underwater field research may require participation in SCUBA and operating vessels. The employee will prepare reports for fishery managers and other scientists and publish manuscripts suitable for peer reviewed publications and management activities. Additional duties include seeking out and preparing high quality proposals for outside funding agencies, performing other related work as required, assisting in other institute activities as requested, as well as promoting and participating in public outreach efforts.



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of principles of management practices and procedures. Knowledge in the use of PCs, advanced statistical programs, and MS office software. Ability to design and implement research studies; coordinate and analyze data; perform statistical analysis; coordinate work assignments; prepare technical reports and manuscripts; to safely operate and trailer vessels up to 25’ in length; to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, principles and procedures used in personnel & budget administration; maintain SCUBA certification; maintain valid driver’s license; swim with sufficient skill to save one self in an emergency; to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; to establish and maintain working relationships with others; to deal effectively with the public and to supervise people.
