I listened to a disturbing article on NPR Fresh Air last week ("Atlantic journalist Stephanie McCrummen says foreign interests are acquiring territory in Northern Tanzania, effectively displacing indigenous cattle-herders from their traditional grazing lands") about what is happening in Tanzania with carbon credits. The new government has signed contracts with The Blue Carbon Initiative to manage around 600 square miles of Tanzanian forests for their C credits, and in doing so, displacing 100,000 Maasai from their homes and grazing ranges, as well as setting up some of the land taken from the Maasai for big game hunting ranches exclusively for the Dubai emirates royal family members. There have been violent conflicts in Tanzania between the Maasai and Tanzanian military trying to move them, thousands Maasai bomas have been destroyed with bulldozers, young Maasai warriors have been killed defending their lands and homes, all in the name of "conservation" combating global warming and attracting tourists.

I found this link on-line: https://bluecarbontanzania.or.tz/developing-blue-carbon-credits/. Nothing is included about the forest management for selling C credits, but I trust the journalist interviewed. Here is the link to the podcast of the episode: https://www.npr.org/programs/fresh-air/2024/04/11/1244070033/fresh-air-for-april-11-2024-a-land-grab-in-tanzania?showDate=2024-04-11

I urge you to contact the blue carbon organizations you are working with to make sure that your efforts are not party to this terrible injustice.

Sincerely,

Alina Szmant

Dear all,

Applications are now open for a new PhD in blue carbon policy in southeast Asia, particularly focusing on Vietnam and Cambodia. This is a 4-year PhD open to all nationalities, fully-funded by the Swedish Research Council.

The project will be highly interdisciplinary, drawing on natural, social and political sciences to co-create a framework for blue carbon policy implementation. More information about the project, and details on how to apply are available here<https://www.nature.com/naturecareers/job/12816332/phd-position-in-environmental-science-blue-carbon-policy-in-se-asia/>.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!

All the best,
Heidi Burdett
