************* Closes October 3, 2003*************************************** Title: Research Assistant Position #: 0445 Location: Long Key, Florida Salary/Term: $24,000-28,000; 12 month term appointment (benefits included) Minimum Qualifications: B.S. degree or M.S. degree, 1-2 years experience in field research, computer literate (MS-DOS-WIN XP), certified SCUBA diver, experience with data management and environmental monitoring, experience with water quality QA/QC procedures, small boat handling skills, experience with electronics. Brief Description of Duties: Research assistant assists in weekly field work and computer work for the Florida Institute of Oceanography's SEAKEYS (Sustained Ecological Research Related to the Florida Keys Seascape) and CARICOMP (Caribbean Coastal Marine Productivity research and m monitoring network) programs. Duties would include maintaining underwater sensors for SEAKEYS, Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution located on the Florida Keys Reef tract and Florida Bay. The RA is to be responsible for sensor maintenance and QA/QC procedures. Duties also include truck and boat maintenance. Special Requirements: Valid Driver's License and Open Water SCUBA, CPR, and First Aid Certification is required. Required Entry Level Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of: the techniques of effective verbal and written communication; marine science and coral reef ecology; safety rules for marine vessel operation; and methods of compiling, organizing, and analyzing of data. Skill in: preparing and delivering public presentations; compiling, analyzing, and presenting data. Ability to: communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; evaluate programs; work independently, including prioritization of workload and schedule; prepare reports and records; establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; deal with the public tactfully and courteously; travel; work non-traditional hours; utilize problem solving techniques; train and coordinate the activities of volunteers; lift heavy objects.
