This announcement appeared in the May 1,1997 Chronicle of
Philanthropy, p. 15:

The James S. McDonnell Foundation plans to award 10 grants--of $1 million
each--to young scientists whose "research shows great scholarly promise
for the 21st century." Applicants must be younger than 40 or must have
received their Ph.D. within the last 12 years.  Grants will be given in 5
areas of study: astrophysics and cosmology, human genetics, global and
complex systems, human cognition, and the history and philosophy of
science.
