rugosity index for habitat complexity

Dear coral-listers, I am looking for a reference that describes the
method for a "rugosity index" to assess habitat complexity of coral reefs,amd
hope that a kind soul out there might help. I understand that it uses the
measure of chain length to assess surface topology, but would very much like
to have a reference, if possible. I've checked BIOSIS and Aquatic Fisheries
Abstracts to no avail.
