If you haven't seen it yet, the following paper was 
recently published in Nature 405: 36 (04 May 2000):

Coral bleach-out in Belize

This article documents the 1998 severe bleaching event on 
the Belize Barrier Reef, which was followed by mass mortality.
The article describes evidence from reef cores which 
indicate that nothing of this magnitude has occurred for 
at least 3000 years.  

A good (albeit depressing) read...
