2004 Lizard Island Doctoral Fellowship

Call for Applications

The Lizard Island Doctoral Fellowships Program provides financial support for field-intensive coral reef research at the Lizard Island Research Station (Great Barrier Reef, Australia) by outstanding PhD students. The Fellowship is awarded by the Australian Museum and funded by the Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation. At least one new fellowship has been awarded each year since 1984.

Applications are invited for the 2004 fellowship from people who are enrolled, or are about to become enrolled, in a PhD program at any university. The PhD project must involve significant field work on coral reefs and it must make good use of the facilities at Lizard Island Research Station. The fellowship may run for up to three years. It provides funding for travel and field expenses but it does not provide salary.

The maximum value of the 2003 Fellowship is AUD 18,000 (AUD 6,000 per annum for up to three years) for students enrolled at an Australian university and AUD 21,000 (AUD 7,000 per annum) for those enrolled at an overseas university. The difference in value is to contribute towards the higher traveling costs that overseas students will incur. Students enrolled at an overseas university but domiciled in Australia are only eligible for a Fellowship totaling AUD 18,000.

The closing date for applications is 1 OCTOBER 2003.
