Session 5-2 planned for the 10th ICRS in Okinawa (28 June to 2 July 2004)
will focus on global mapping issues and distribution technologies (including
web and GIS tools).

Here's the full description of the session:

Producing, distributing, and analyzing global coral reef maps--the state of
the art

A synoptic understanding of the location, extent, and status of coral reefs
of the world has remained elusive. This session will examine major efforts
for global coral reef mapping, the technologies and methods that will make
these maps and underlying data available to the coral reef research and
management communities, and the potential for global syntheses. Although
remote sensing will be discussed as the foundation for these mapping
efforts, the emphasis will be on how mapping objectives and protocols are
structured to meet the needs of end users, while still being possible to
apply to large areas. Concurrent with global map production, systems must
be established for digital access to the maps and data. The technologies
and constraints of distribution systems and how they can be crafted to
better meet the needs of end users will also be discussed. Finally, once
global maps are complete, new assessments of the status and trends of coral
reefs will become possible. Presenters will discuss the previous techniques
for global analyses of coral reefs, and how our view of the state of coral
reefs will change with increasing availability of global datasets and map
products.
