[Coral-List] Satellite or acoustic surveying - what would you choose?

Dear All,

What would people recommend, Satellite (IKONOS, LANDSAT etc) or acoustic (SSS, ROXswath etc.) for mapping large areas of tropical benthic habitats?

There are obvious limitations to IKONOS etc., depth limited to about 25m dependant upon water column clarity (does anybody have an exact details regarding the level of turbidity that causes reduced IKONOS performance). Likewise the field time of using e.g. ROXann/swath could be seen as a deterant. Has anybody had to chose between the two methods? If so, what were your reasons? Has anybody performed cost-benefit analysis? I have quite a bit of literature on this topic but also wanted to get feedback from those professionals using the methods and not just the academics.

Cheers all

Iain Macd.
