   Dear all
A sponge species Clathria frontifera collected from 2 meter depth in a
coral reef near Mahabalipuram, Chennai (=Madras Coast) has been tested
and found that n-methyl pyrrolidone which is a solvent widely used for
paints, nail polish and PVC adhesive as a solvent. It is a
biodegradable compound. It is presumed that the identification of
this compound n-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) in the sponge collected is
used to dissolve the calcium carbonate of the coral to bore and live
on the surface is a question? I request any one who can help in
knowing more about this compound nmp's actual function in the sponge
whether it is really used to dissolve the calcium carbonate and to
bore and live on the coral.
Information on this is very much appreciated.
I TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO WISH A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR 2005 to all the
   listers.
   Thanks very much
