Position: Extension Specialist II ­ Virgin Islands Marine Advisory
Service (VIMAS)
Department: Center for Marine and Environmental Studies,
MacLean Marine Science Center, St. Thomas US Virgin Islands
Assignment: Applicant will work as the primary outreach agent for the
Virgin Islands Marine Advisory Service, a branch of the Puerto Rico Sea
Grant program, covering the St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island areas.
Basic responsibilities require developing a comprehensive outreach and
environmental education program that includes marine habitat
conservation, non-point source pollution, the impact of human activities
on coastal resources and the importance of marine protected areas for
the sustainability of fishery resources. Must be willing to interact
with and make presentations to local fishermen, teachers and students
and the community, and complete administrative tasks as assigned.
Successful applicant is expected to pursue other sources of grant
funding and develop independent outreach projects in his or her area of
interest and develop collaborative Territory-wide programs with the St.
Croix VIMAS office and other agencies.
Qualifications:
• Master of Science degree in marine science or related field.
• Two years experience related to public outreach and environmental
education.
• Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others.
• Excellent writing and communication skills.
• Working knowledge of Caribbean marine habitats and associated
organisms.
• High degree of motivation and maturity.
• Must be a US citizen and hold a valid driver’s license.
Compensation: The salary range for this professional staff position is
$29,500 to $31,505 for the administrative year, depending upon
qualifications and experience. Benefits include the liberal TIAA-CREF or
the Virgin Islands Government Retirement Plan, and a comprehensive group
medical, dental and life insurance program.
