[Coral-List] registration deadline for 10ICRS

Dear Coral Listers

There was a fair range of responses to my query about the early
registration deadline for the 10ICRS. Clearly, a balance needs to be achieved
between the administration of a large conference, and ensuring accessibility to
the conference in an equitable manner. My suggestion would be something along
the lines of an early registration deadline, requiring a registration fee
something in the order of 25% of the total conference fee, with the balance
payable any time until the conference starts. I'd guess this would
be affordable to mmost people, but would be substantial enough to
discourage 'speculative' registration by anyone who was not going to make a
serious effort to raise the rest of the funds.
As far as notification of acceptance of abstracts goes, abstracts for the Bali
symposium were submitted to the convener of each mini-symposium. The reply, at
least in my case was prompt. Is there any reason why that system was not used
again?
One more point - I received a message from the ICRS secretariat, stating that
if my registration fee was not received by March 4, my abstract would be
canceled!! If there was time available until March 4, why was this not set as
the deadline from the beginning, giving people a reasonable time to raise the
funds?
