2004 Lizard Island Doctoral Fellowship

Call for Preliminary Applications

 

The Lizard Island Doctoral Fellowships Program provides financial support for field-intensive coral reef research at the Lizard Island Research Station (Great Barrier Reef, Australia) by outstanding PhD students. A fellowship of one to three years' duration is offered annually.  It is awarded by the Australian Museum and funded by the Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation.  



Preliminary applications are invited for the 2005 fellowship from people who are enrolled, or are about to become enrolled, in a PhD program at any university.  The PhD project must involve significant field work on coral reefs and it must make good use of the facilities at Lizard Island Research Station.  The fellowship provides funding for travel and field expenses for up to three years but it does not provide salary.  Preliminary application requires a curriculum vitae and a one page project outline addressing specific selection criteria.  A small number of preliminary applicants will be invited to make a more detailed application.  

 

The maximum value of the fellowship is AUD 18,000 (AUD 6,000 per annum for up to three years) for students enrolled at an Australian university and AUD 21,000 (AUD 7,000 per annum) for those enrolled at an overseas university. The difference in value is to contribute towards the higher traveling costs that overseas students will incur.  Students enrolled at an overseas university but domiciled in Australia are only eligible for a fellowship totaling AUD 18,000.

 

The closing date for preliminary applications is 1 SEPTEMBER 2004.
