POSITION: Program Assistant (Full-time, permanent) with Marine Conservation Biology Institute
 
START DATE: May/June, 2005 
 
LOCATION: MCBI Headquarters in Redmond, Washington or Program Office in Glen Ellen, California.
 
MCBI is seeking a self-starting, independent, energetic and enthusiastic individual to join our team of dedicated marine conservationists. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES: The Program Assistant will work under the supervision of MCBI's Chief Scientist, assisting MCBI staff members with current marine conservation initiatives (e.g., fishing impacts, seamounts, deep-sea corals, ecosystem-based management and zoning). Duties include conducting library and internet research, synthesizing information, maintaining records and relevant information, fact checking and writing scientific papers and reports. Additional tasks include routine office tasks and assistance with fundraising and administration. 
 
QUALIFICATIONS: This position is an entry-level job for those interested in pursuing a career in ocean conservation. The successful applicant will have a thorough understanding of current issues in marine conservation in both the US and internationally. The job requires at least a college degree and excellent organizational and communications (written and verbal) abilities; experience meeting deadlines; a self-starting personality and ability to work independently are important as well as interest in working as part of a team; attention to detail and advanced computer skills are essential, including word processing, using the Internet, database management, and experience with Microsoft Office applications. Experience with presentation and graphics applications, including web applications, skills with Geographic Information Systems, and/or copy-editing skills are a plus. A good sense of humor, interest in the ocean and conservation issues and belief in the mission of MCBI is essential.
