The University of the Virgin Islands' Center for Marine and
Environmental Studies is seeking qualified applicants for a Research
Specialist (Ph.D) or Research Analyst (MS) position in coral reef
assessment and monitoring. The successful candidate will be
responsible for coordinating all aspects of UVI's Coral Reef
Assessment and Monitoring program. Responsibilities include
coordinating field logistics and supervision of research staff and
students, data collection and analysis using video monitoring protocol
and sedimentation monitoring equipment, data analyses, and report
writing. Successful candidate will assist director prepare
manuscripts for publication and write grant proposals. Candidate will
also participate in other projects including fisheries research and
spawning aggregation studies. Requires excellent writing,
communication and computer skills, SCUBA diving skill and willingness
to dive to depths up to 135 ft using nitrox, ability to operate
vessels, perform administrative duties such as personnel and budget
management and participate in occasional community outreach
activities.
Qualifications include Ph.D. in marine biology or related field or
Master of Science degree and 2 years relevant experience, ability to
work independently and cooperatively with others, skilled boat handler
and scuba diver, familiarity with Caribbean corals, fishes and other
marine organisms and habitats, strong GIS experience, experience with
grant writing and writing scientific publications.
The salary range for this position is $28,000 to $40,000 for the
administrative year (12 mo.), depending upon qualifications and
experience. Benefits include the liberal TIAA-CREF or the Virgin
Islands Government Retirement Plan, and a comprehensive group medical,
dental, and life insurance program.
