The Perry Institute for Marine Science (www.perryinstitute.org
<http://www.perryinstitute.org/> ), a US non-profit organization that has
been successfully running a marine biology research facility in the Bahamas
since 1970, is seeking a Senior Research Associate for its remote marine
research center located on Lee Stocking Island, Exuma, Bahamas.

 

This is a demanding & challenging, on-island resident position.  This Senior
Research Associate is responsible for the general oversight of all island
science, research, educational projects and related facilities and
equipment.  The ideal candidate must be flexible with priorities, able to
juggle multiple demands, and be relentless about work being done correctly
and accurately.  A team-oriented attitude is also required.  Must be a self
starter, a fast learner and able to maintain confidentiality.

 

Minimum qualifications include a Masters of Science degree in a related
field such as marine science, biology, ecology, etc.  Formal scientific
diver training is also a minimum requirement.  Other requirements include a
proven ability to safely manage and coordinate multiple ongoing scientific
and educational projects of varying scales in a remote tropical setting, the
ability to organize, manage and conduct field studies, analyze scientific
data and prepare scientific reports and manuscripts for publication.

Applicant must meet PIMS/AAUS Scientific Diver requirements upon arrival at
LSI.

details on this requirement.  Recreational SCUBA certification at an
Advanced rating or higher is required.  Divemaster is preferred; however
advanced training could include certification as a Rescue Diver.  Current
Basic CPR, First Aid and Oxygen Administration certifications are required.

Ability to operate small power boats (15-25 ft.) and swim are also required.

Field research experience in a tropical marine environment and basic
proficiency in field identification of tropical Western Atlantic marine
flora and fauna is required. Also required is knowledge of the scientific
equipment and methodologies required to perform scientific research and to
obtain the necessary data, especially transect-based visual and photographic
surveys and use of acoustic telemetry.  Experience with common office and
database software (MS Access, Excel, various word processors) is required.

Experience with GIS software applications and the collection and analysis of
spatial data are a plus.

Salary will be commensurate with experience.  Additional compensation
