School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology, Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research. 
Six (6), Regular Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service positions with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), located at the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC) in Honolulu, Hawaii. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, and availability of funds. 

Minimum Monthly Salary: $2,607.00. 

Duties: Works with the Coral Reef Ecosystem Division?s (CRED?s) multi-agency, multi-disciplinary program to support marine ecosystem research and conservation efforts, including surveys of fishes, corals, algae, invertebrates, marine debris, oceanographic conditions, and benthic habitats. Works with the Principal Investigators to process, analyze, and summarize data from various coral reef research surveys and conservation projects. Prepares and analyzes summary statistics, presentation graphics, and reports of coral reef research and monitoring efforts. Participates in research cruises and marine ecosystem surveys to assess, monitor and mitigate threats to the coral reef ecosystems of the U.S. Pacific Islands. Assists with all operational phases of the program to support this research, including planning, implementation, analyses and reporting. Prepares scientific reports for publication and presentation. Prepares and delivers presentations as part of the program?s education and outreach efforts. Type A incumbents will have SCUBA Diving responsibilities. Type B incumbents will not have SCUBA Diving responsibilities. Assignment to Type A or Type B will be based on ability to pass post-offer National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Dive Certification requirements. 

Minimum Qualifications: Education: Bachelor?s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Marine Biology, Zoology, Biology, Botany, Ecosystem Science, Oceanography, Geography (GIS), Computer Sciences, Ocean Engineering, or related field involving studies of marine science or coral reef ecosystems. Experience: One to three (1-3) years of experience with marine research projects which included data analysis, report writing, and marine underwater survey techniques or ocean engineering and development. Previous experience at sea for extended periods of time (2 weeks or more) aboard research or fisheries vessels. 

Abil/Know/Skills: Working knowledge of at least one of the following areas: oceanographic processes, reef fish taxonomy, coral taxonomy, algal taxonomy, coral reef ecology, GIS applications, acoustic mapping, marine underwater survey techniques, or ocean engineering. Knowledge of statistical procedures to perform data analyses, including interpretation of results pertaining to ecosystem processes. Must possess good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work independently and make decisions, on matters including repetitive tasks involving the use of computers and dissecting microscopes. Ability to maintain a high degree of accuracy and precision. Ability to use statistical, analytical and presentation (including GIS) software. Proficiency with basic office productivity software tools, including word processors, spreadsheets, and MS PowerPoint. Must possess a valid driver?s license to assist with transporting equipment and gear. Must be able to pass all training requirements, including but not limited to advanced coxswain training, the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW), advanced first aid, CPR, oxygen assistance, and forklift training. Additional Requirements for Type A Positions: Must be SCUBA certified (NAUI, PADI, etc.) to meet the standards established by the program?s diver certification process (which meets the standards set by the American Academy of Underwater Science). Must be able to complete UH/NOAA diving certification, which includes meeting the physical, watermanship, academic, and experience requirements. Must be able to complete SCUBA diving advanced open water certification with a minimum of 40 dives and possess good free diving skills. Physical and/or Medical Demands: Must be able to obtain NOAA Medical Clearance for NOAA diving requirements (for Type A position) as well as for embarking/working on NOAA research vessels or other appropriate vessels which includes providing proof of required immunizations and/or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations. Ability to work long hours outdoors at various captive facilities and remote locations with high exposure to sunlight, aboard research vessels and aboard small boats (15-20?) in coastal and oceanic waters. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds of scuba gear and equipment. 

Desirable Qualifications: Master?s Degree from an accredited college or university in a Biological Science, Marine Science, or Ecosystem Science field. Experience with underwater digital videography and photography. Ability and experience with identifying coral reef ecosystem organisms, particularly Indo-Pacific species, and quantifying abundances. Working knowledge of ArcView GIS, Matlab, AutoCAD, ACDSee, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Paint Shop Pro. Ability to develop computer programs and scripts. Experience with Global Positioning System receivers and data. Previous experience in small boat handling and maintenance. Experience with outboard motors, SCUBA compressors, and repair of each.
