ANNOUNCEMENT - Workshop for Coral Reef Managers: Tools For Predicting
and Responding to Coral Bleaching Events
August 27-29, 2007
A Follow-on Event of the US Coral Reef Task Force Meeting in American
Samoa
NOAA's Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) and Australia's Great
Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority (GBRMPA) announce a joint 3-day
"Bleaching Tools Workshop" to increase the ability of coral reef
managers to anticipate and respond to coral bleaching events. This is
a follow-on event of the US Coral Reef Task Force Meeting scheduled to
take place in American Samoa during August 20-25, 2007. Task Force
Members and staff are welcome to participate.
When and Where:
Tentative dates for the Workshop are August 27-29, 2007. Please note
that individuals who are traveling to attend the Task Force meeting
should plan to extend their stay in order to attend the follow-on
Workshop. Location is to be determined, but will be coordinated with
the venue of the Task Force meeting in American Samoa.
What will be provided:
o Training in the use of satellite monitoring products to forecast
and track coral bleaching events.
o Training in the use of management strategies and planning tools
from A Reef Manager's Guide to Coral Bleaching to help coral reefs
survive future bleaching events.
o The workshop will also include components on the incorporation
and utilization of satellite remote sensing tools into the management
protocols in their local regions.
o A field component will be included (to be determined).
Who should attend:
Marine park managers, reserve managers, coral scientists, and other
interested stakeholders.
