[Coral-List] Carbon footprint - molecular biology

The carbon footprint directly related to my own work is something I
have been thinking about for a while. I am a PhD student working in a
molecular biology lab (on coral population genetics) and I estimate
that I have gone through at least 50,000 tips and an equal number of
eppendorf tubes, vials, etc... on this single project. I thought
about keeping track of my tip-and-tube usage from the start, but the
final number would have been too daunting to contemplate. The
dichotomy of the situation is not lost on most labbies, but I
unfortunately I can't think of many ways to keep on doing the research
but with a significantly lower carbon footprint.
