MessageTHEME ISSUE: "Range-wide status and conservation of the Goliath grouper"

A theme issue of the fast growing conservation jornal Endangered Species Research (ESR) http://www.int-res.com/journals/esr/ focusing on "Range-wide status of the Goliath grouper" is in preparation for publication mid-2008.

The Goliath grouper (Epinephelus itajara ) is one of the world's largest and longest lived serranids. Heavily targeted by artisanal and recreational fisheries throughout its broad distributional range, the global declines in abundance and extirpation of Goliath grouper spawning aggregations are of growing concern. Innovative research and management approaches coupled with international collaborative efforts are needed address this pressing conservation problem.

This ESR special issue will be catalyzed by a Symposium <http://www.gcfi.org/Conferences/60th/GoliathGrouper.html> at the 60th Annual Conference of the Gulf and Caribbean Fisheries Institute. Manuscripts addressing goliath grouper biology, age and growth, reproduction, behaviour, population dynamics, genetics as well as management and conservation are welcomed. To discuss the suitability of a manuscript for inclusion in this ESR Special, please contact Dr. Rachel Graham (Wildlife Conservation Society and Guest Editor) <rgraham at wcs.org> or Dr. Brendan Godley (ESR Editor-in-Chief) b.j.godley at exeter.ac.uk

This ESR Theme Issue compliments others underway:

For 2007:

"Tracking vertebrates for their conservation". Now building with 2 articles published and 3 in press.

For 2008:

"Bycatch: problems and solutions"

"Bats: status, threats and conservation successes"

"Forensic methods in conservation"

"Incorporating climate change into endangered species conservation"

Please pass this message on to those who you think may be interested.

With kind regards
