Coastal-Marine Ecosystem-Based Management Tools Training for South Pacific
Practitioners

 

to be held August 27th-29th, 2008

 

on Magnetic Island, Australia (near Townsville, Australia)

To: Coastal-marine planners, resource managers, environmental decision
makers, and coastal marine ecosystem based management implementers.

 

You are invited to register for a Coastal-Marine Ecosystem-Based Management
(EBM) Tools Training to be held on August 27-29, 2008, on Magnetic Island,
Australia.

 

About the Training

The event will provide information and training on methods and software
tools to facilitate coastal-marine ecosystem-based management (EBM)
processes.  Two concurrent tracks are anticipated:

* Track A: Overviews and Case Studies.  This track will focus on
practitioners that are new to EBM software tool applications and will
provide presentations, demonstrations, and discussion on which tools and
processes can address practitioner needs.

* Track B: Experienced Technical Practitioners.  This track will allow those
with more technical experience to learn more advanced approaches and get
hands-on training in select tools.

The topics that will be covered will be determined by the priority needs of
attendees.  Possible topics include: 

* Integrated Land-Sea Planning

* Pelagic Dynamics

* Marine Ecosystem Conservation Planning

* Watershed Planning

* Ecosystem Economics

* Coral Reef Bleaching and Resilience

* Connectivity

* MPA Network Design

* Community Engagement

* Specific Tools or Technical Methods Development

* Ecosystem-Based Fisheries Management

Please note: Not all topics will be covered in this training, but trainers
will make every effort to cover as many priority topics chosen by

Training Hosts

This training is hosted by the EBM Tools Network?s Training Program with
special acknowledgement to local hosts at the ARC Centre of Excellence for
Coral Reef Studies, James Cook University, and the University of Queensland.
The EBM Tools Network (www.ebmtools.org) is an alliance of EBM tool
developers, practitioners, and training providers to increase awareness of
existing EBM tools, promote the development and maintenance of EBM tools,
and promote the effective use of EBM tools.

 

Training venue and accommodations

The meeting will be held at the Magnetic Island International Resort located
on Magnetic Island.? Magnetic Island is accessible by ferry from Townsville.


 

Accommodations at the Magnetic Island International Resort are available for
$110 a night (single or twin share room).  Meeting participants will be
contacted about how to book rooms at this rate at a later date.

 

Training costs

Meeting registration will be provided to participants free of charge through
funding from the David & Lucile Packard Foundation.  Participants are
expected to cover their own transportation, accommodation, and meal costs.
If travel support is needed to make participation possible, please let
organizers know by June 20th.  Travel support for participation will be
considered on a case-by-case basis and is not guaranteed.

Technology Tools for Ecosystem-Based Management of Coral Reefs

Dear coral reef ecosystem planers, managers, decision makers, and
coastal-marine ecosystem based management implementers,

 

We, the Coastal-Marine Ecosystem Based Management Tools Network, would like
to invite you to a workshop which will address technology tools and methods
for EBM.

 

The Technology Tools for Ecosystem Based Management of Coral Reefs workshop
will address, how technology tools can facilitate EBM in coral reef
ecosystems.  We plan to cover, coral reef resilience, marine reserve and
local fisheries interactions, coral reef ecosystem mapping, spatial analysis
and MPA network design.

 

This work shop includes self selecting break out groups with demonstrations
provided by:
