For the colleagues discussing the destiny of the reefs perhaps would be of interest "The Medea hypothesis:  is life on earth ultimately self-destructive?" (2009) by Peter Ward.  
 
In a different angle might be intriguing also "Unscientific America:  how scientific illiteracy threatens our future" (2009) by Chris Mooney & Sheril Kirshenbaum. 
 
Amazingly, how invasive is Homo sapiens.
