The following courses are being offered this spring by George Mason
University's Center for Field Studies, Fairfax, Virginia, and include a
week-long SCUBA trip aboard the /Morning Star/, a 65’ Sloop sailboat in
The Bahamas, May 15-21, 2010. /*Students are encouraged but not required
to have a minimum of Basic Open Water SCUBA certification./

Coral Reef Ecology, BIOL 440, NCLC 498, 3 credits

Instructor: Mike Henley

A series of classroom lectures during Spring 2010 semester, culminates
in a week-long SCUBA trip to the /Exuma Land and Sea Park. /Study marine
life on the fragile coral reef ecosystem. Learn to identify a variety of
corals, fish and other reef creatures while observing how they interact
in their native habitat, and understand why The Bahamas are known as
"the Ephemeral Islands."

Underwater Research Investigations, BIOL 505, 2 Credits

Instructor: Chris Parsons

This graduate course provides students with the opportunity to use
underwater research techniques in a sub-marine environment; comprehend
the logistical problems and difficulties involved with underwater
research; apply their knowledge of marine biological and conservation
issues; develop an innovative biological or technological research
hypothesis with respect to the underwater environment; evaluate and test
these research hypotheses in the field; collate and analyze data
collected during this hypothesis testing phase; and synthesize the
results of the project in the form of a scientific paper.

Both courses have additional fees which cover tuition, charter fees,
roundtrip transportation from northern Virginia, ground transportation,
lodging and meals while on the boat. Fees are $1,870.00 for a single
birth and $1,550.00 for a double (shared). A $500.00 deposit is required
to hold your seat in either class. Students engaging in SCUBA activity
on this trip must meet American Academy of Underwater Scientists (AAUS)
standards.
