[Coral-List] Buried Corals

There are places here on St. Croix, U. S. Virgin Islands, that have corals that are under several feet of sand.

Once a hurricane moved away a substantial amount of sand near the town of Frediksted, on the west coast of the island that has long sandy beaches.  There were coral heads exposed that looked like they had been  healthy and growing when suddenly buried.

Along the southwest corner of the island, there is coral under a deep layer of sand.

I'm guessing that sea and ocean currents make large changes at times, to bring in so much sand, several to many meters depth of sand that stays put.

Cheers,
