Dear Coral-listers:

If you know of undergraduate students that would be interested in a
summer course in Scientific Diving or Tropical Marine Biology and
Ecology; please pass this notice along to them.

Thanks in advance. Cheers, Rita Peachey

Summer 2009 Bonaire, Southern CaribbeanUndergraduate Study Abroad Program

CIEE Research Station Bonaire is accepting applications for:

Tropical Marine Biology & Ecology of the Southern Caribbean

(3 semester hr)

Introduction to ecological and biological principles important to coral
reef communities such as competition, diversity, symbiosis,
disturbance, adaptation, reproduction, as well as identification of the
major fish, invertebrate and plant species in Bonaire. Examines
connectedness of reef, seagrass and mangrove ecosystems and threats to
tropical ecosystems. The course runs from May 30 through June 13th and
includes daily field trips to dive, snorkel or kayak at sites along the
coast of Bonaire.

Marine Ecology Field Research Methods

(3 semester hr)

Students learn to use scuba as a research tool instrumental to
understanding the underwater environment. This course focuses on
learning to record and collect data underwater. While the course
introduces students to research diving knowledge and techniques with
broad applications, it focuses on using scuba to better understand
coral reef environments. The course runs from June 15th through July
2nd and includes daily field trips to dive, snorkel or kayak at sites
along the coast of Bonaire.

Advanced Scuba

(1 semester hr)

Students expand their understanding of scuba diving beyond the
recreational level in order to participate fully in the scientific dive
program in Bonaire. Students learn techniques that improve their diving
skills and they learn to respond to medical emergencies in or out of
the water. By completing the course, students gain certifications in
Open Water Diving, Advanced Open Water Diving, Rescue Diving, Emergency
First Responder, and Diver’s Alert Network Oxygen First Aid. The
course runs from June 15th through July 2nd and includes daily field
trips to dive at sites along the coast of Bonaire.
