Fully funded PhD studentship which may be of interest to those with a more geoscience-orientated background.
NOTE: Due to UK Research Council funding rules this is only available to UK citizens or UK-based EU citizens

Project title: Criteria for interpreting carbonate platform drowning histories and resultant diagenetic fabrics: insights from
actively subsiding platform margins from the Huon Gulf and Hawaii.

Applications are invited for a fully funded NERC PhD studentship (CASE award with BG Group) to work on a project that will
develop diagenetic criteria for interpreting carbonate platform drowning histories. Specifically, the student will make use of
the unique collections of successive drowned carbonate platform deposits that have been recovered from Hawaii and the Huon Gulf to
examine the effects of progressive platform drowning on the evolution of platform facies and diagenetic fabrics. The studentship
will be based within the Tropical Coastal and Marine Research Group at MMU, but will also interact closely with the CASE partner
(BG Group - including spending time in their Reading Exploration Department) and with an external project supervisor at the
University of Sydney (Jody Webster). Applications are encouraged from students with a strong first degree and, preferably, a
Masters-level qualification, in a relevant area of Earth Sciences, Geology or Marine Geosciences, and who have a strong interest
in carbonate depositional systems and/or marine geology.

The student will receive a NERC PhD Doctoral Training Grant (currently £13,290 per annum) and have their fees paid, but will also
receive an additional financial contribution from the CASE partner BG Group (currently £3000 per annum).

Please note that due to NERC funding rules applicants must be UK residents (or EU citizens who have lived in the UK for more than
3 years).

Closing date for applications: Friday 1st May 2009
