FUNDING OPPORTUNITY: EXPLORATION AND RESEARCH OF MID-ATLANTIC DEEPWATER HARD
BOTTOM HABITATS WITH EMPHASIS ON CANYONS AND CORAL COMMUNITIES
The National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP) welcomes research
proposals on the following topic: Exploration and Research of Mid-Atlantic
Deepwater Hard Bottom Habitats and Shipwrecks with Emphasis on Canyons and
Coral Communities. Proposals must include partnerships between at least two
of the following three sectors: academia, industry (including NGOs), and
government.

The deadline for pre-proposals is April 30, 2010. For more information,

Knowledge of the distribution and sensitivity of unique biological habitats
in deep water is necessary for management decisions regarding potential oil
and gas development in the Atlantic region. The purpose of this study is to
focus on exploration and study of selected habitats that will refine the
understanding of the distribution and complexity of hard bottom communities
in the mid-Atlantic slope area. If patchy distribution of sensitive
communities is observed, one objective will be to define environmental
conditions that result in the observed distribution of significant
high-density hard bottom communities that are sensitive to impacts from oil
and gas development activities.
