Dear members

I'd be grateful if you could forward this opportunity to anyone that might be looking for a PhD in reef ecology. They would have to be Australian or NZ citizens or permanent residents.

Thanks

Pete

PhD Scholarship – Coral reef ecology, University of Queensland (Brisbane), ARC CoE for Coral Reef Studies.

Applications are invited for a 4 year fully-funded PhD scholarship based at the University of Queensland, School of Biological Sciences which is located at the St. Lucia campus in Brisbane. The project will examine the ecology of macroalgae on Pacific coral reefs and will provide new insight into the role of conservation measures in helping to boost coral reef resilience. New studies are needed to understand and quantify the dynamics of algae, which often play a pivotal role in driving reef health. Field work will take place across the Great Barrier Reef and possibly include sites within Micronesia. The student will join a lively research group of 16 researchers whose expertise spans coral biology, reef ecology, conservation science, ecological modelling, and remote sensing. Outcomes of the PhD research will help refine quantitative models of the effects of climate change on reef health.

Applications are welcome from citizens or permanent residents of Australia and New Zealand. Applicants should have either an honours or masters degree in a relevant ecological or biological subject, proven research experience (e.g., published papers), and expect to be fully certified for scientific diving before commencement of the position. The position can start at any time between 1st October 2010 and 1st January 2011.

Interested parties should send their CV, a list of 3 referees, and a statement on their research background, research ambition, and how these fit with the general research topic outlined here. Please direct information to Prof Peter Mumby, Marine Spatial Ecology Lab, School of Biological Sciences & ARC CoE for Coral Reef Studies, p.j.mumby at uq.edu.au

Closing date for applications: September 15th 2010.
