Oceana is seeking a motivated and passionate individual to join the science
department as a Marine Science Fellow. The Marine Science Fellow will focus
largely on science and policy issues related to Oceana’s shark and sea
turtle campaigns. This Washington, DC based fellowship includes a stipend
and benefits. The fellowship is a one year position with the possibility of
extension for a second year.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct research and write reports, background materials, factsheets,
and other materials in support of the campaign goals.
- Draft comment letters related to policy objectives.
- Develop, review and edit materials associated with campaigns for
scientific accuracy.
- Provide scientific support at fishery management meetings, agency
meetings and lobbying on the hill.
- Aid in the planning and execution of events.
- Work collaboratively with departments within Oceana as well as outside
organizations.
Qualifications:
- Masters degree or PhD in biology, marine science, environmental
management, or similar field is required with 1-3 years of experience
preferred.
- A solid understanding of U.S. marine fisheries management, sharks, sea
turtles and bycatch through education and/or experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management
Act and Endangered Species Act
- Excellent research, writing, and communication skills
- Ability to work effectively in a team
- Energy, enthusiasm, and a strong desire to learn
- Ability to work independently on discrete projects
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- GIS proficiency is a plus
