ANNOUNCEMENT FOR:
*one-week Training Course in OCEANS AND HUMAN HEALTH *
*22nd to 26th of November 2010*
*UWI, Cave Hill Campus, BARBADOS*


We invite graduate students (from the Caribbean and Canada) and
professionals (from the Caribbean) working on health and environmental
themes to apply to the training course in Oceans and Human Health hosted by
The University of the West Indies (UWI), Laval University and the Caribbean
EcoHealth Programme and funded by the Global Health Research Capacity
Strengthening Programme (GHR-CAPS) and the International Development
Research Institute (IDRC) of Canada.  There will be a limited number of
places (20) for this event that will gather researchers, students and
practitioners from Canada and the Caribbean. A selection committee will
examine the applications according to research interests, experience and
relevance of this training activity in the applicant’s career.**

*Themes*

**

·       Contaminants in bathing sea water, marine species and impact on
human health;**

**

·       Marine ecotoxicology, toxicology and epidemiology of POPs and
metals;**

**

·       Natural toxins in fish (ciguatera and others);**

**

·       Seafood safety;**

**

·       Seafood nutrition - omega-3, selenium etc.;**

**

·       Field tours and laboratory exercises.



*Eligibility*

Candidates must conform to the following eligibility criteria:

   - Registered in a master or PhD programme in a Caribbean University or be
   a post-doctoral fellow or be a research professional or
practitioner. *Fellows
   of the Global Health Research Capacity Strengthening Program (GHR-CAPS) are
   also eligible and encouraged to apply;*
   - Be a *Caribbean* *Professional* *or Practitioner in the field of
   Fisheries or Environmental Health;*
   - Have research or practice interests linked to the OHH themes. We will
   examine applications from all relevant disciplines;
   - Engage to participate to the entire OHH Training Course.

*Training Award*

Selected participants will receive a training award to a maximum of USD
1500.00 in order to cover the costs of the OHH course. The actual amount of
the training award will vary based on expenses to be incurred and place of
residence. Selected participants will receive information on the amount of
the award by *October 18, 2010*.
