Dear coral-listers,
"Managing the growing impacts of development on fragile coastal and
marine ecosystems - Lessons from the Gulf'' is a policy report recently
published by the United Nations University's Canadian based Institute
for Water, Environment and Health (UNU INWEH). This 82 page report
discusses how coastal development and other human impacts are
compromising a valuable and unique marine ecosystem in the Persian Gulf
that is shared by eight countries - Bahrain, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, Oman,
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates. The report recommends
possible steps to be taken to build a region-wide, coordinated
management program and suggests that one or more bordering nation(s)
provide leadership to build a 'made-in-the-Gulf-region' solution that
could be an example for other coastal regions in the world. The report
is available for free download at:
