The Center for Marine and Environmental Studies at the University of the Virgin Islands is seeking a qualified applicant to fill the vacancy for a Spatial Analysis and Statistics Specialist.  This Research Specialist position is needed to meet the growing demand for spatial data analysis and curation in marine research and management.  The candidate will join a growing research center in a US Caribbean jurisdiction surrounded by exceptional marine ecosystems.  This position offers opportunities for fieldwork and independent academic pursuits.

Position: Spatial Analyst and Statistics Specialist

Basic Functions and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Center for Marine and Environmental Studies Director, the successful candidate will provide technical support for the Spatial Analysis and Statistics laboratory (SAS) and MacLean Marine Science Center, as well as be a part of the advanced/technical research dive team collecting data for various projects. The candidate will be responsible for collecting and analyzing and distributing geographic data relative to the marine sciences with particular emphasis in integrating GIS methods and analytical techniques with biological databases. The candidate will also be responsible for organizing relevant datasets and producing high quality maps; contributing to manuscript and report production; and performing other duties as determined by the director.

Qualifications
Master's degree in Marine Science or related field and 3 years of related professional experience is required; 
Knowledge and experience in Geographic Information Systems (specifically, ArcInfo, spatial analyst and 3D analyst extensions);
Strong statistical and computing skills; 
Advanced and technical dive certifications (advanced NITROX and closed circuit rebreather certification preferred or willingness to receive training); 
Knowledge of Caribbean coral and fish species; 
Ability to collect and manage data; 
Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills; 
Must have a high degree of motivation, maturity and the ability to serve a diverse educational and cultural public constituency.
