Research Scientist - ARC Super Science Fellowship
Interactive effects of changing climate, seawater carbonate chemistry and nutrient availability on corals and coral reefs
(Position No. 468)

The Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) is the leading national organisation researching tropical marine ecosystems. As part of the Australian Government's Super Science Initiative (Marine and Climate), AIMS has received competitive funding from the Australian Research Council to support an exceptional early-career researcher. The successful applicant will conduct original research within a Project entitled "A Changing Climate on the Great Barrier Reef: Present and Future Implications", with a focus on the topic "Interactive effects of changing climate, seawater carbonate chemistry and nutrient availability on corals and coral reefs."

This fellowship represents an exceptional opportunity for an early-career researcher with demonstrated experience and research skills in one or several of the fields of ecophysiology, molecular biology, numerical ecology and ecological modelling. The successful candidate will be a high achiever with a strong publication record relative to career history, and a PhD in an appropriate discipline, awarded within the past 3 years. A demonstrated understanding of the ecology of benthic marine ecosystems, their coupling to seawater chemistry (acidification, water quality), and the interactive effects of multiple stressors on benthos is also essential.

The successful candidate will join a collaborative, multidisciplinary team (including 5 other Super Science Fellows) addressing important questions about the future of coral reefs. AIMS has world-class laboratory facilities, two modern research vessels and extensive technical support. Facilities are presently being enhanced with $55M of capital funds from the Australian Government, which includes a new state-of-the-art seawater precinct to support innovative experimental research into coral spawning, water quality and climate change.

Attractive working conditions apply including a remuneration package of AU$73,714 - AU$81,091 commencing salary plus up to 15.4% superannuation, learning and development opportunities, generous leave entitlements, 9 day fortnight, commuter car transportation to site and many other benefits. This opportunity is available for a fixed term period of three years, to commence prior to 31 December 2011, and will be based in Townsville, Queensland.

Application information is available from www.aims.gov.au/employment<http://www.aims.gov.au/employment>. Position enquiries may be directed to Dr Katharina Fabricius (k.fabricius at aims.gov.au). The closing date for this opportunity is 19 August 2011.
