[Coral-List] 2nd Call: 12ICRS Call for Abstracts, Mini-Symposium 5b: Sensor Networks and Their Applications

Greetings fellow Coral-Listers!

    We very much look forward to seeing you during the 12th
International Coral Reef Symposium, to be held in Cairns, Queensland,
Australia, July 9 - 13, 2012.  We will be convening the mini-symposium
"Sensor Networks and Their Applications" and hope you will consider
submitting an abstract for the session.  Please note that the abstracts
should be submitted through the 12ICRS Web site at
http://www.icrs2012.com between July 1 and October 1, 2011.  A

Mini-Symposium 5b:  Sensor Networks and Their Applications
 
With the increase in robustness of underwater in situ sensor technology,
new capabilities have arisen to provide for real-time or near real-time
monitoring or sensing of coral ecosystem dynamics hitherto
unattainable.  Coincident with this rise in technology has been the need
for resource managers to make more timely decisions, especially since
daily and seasonal values appear to be reaching thresholds of ecosystem
stress that have been characterized as deleterious in the past.  
Sensors relevant to ocean acidification, eutrophication, sedimentation,
ocean acoustics, videography, and fluorometry have become tools for
understanding and decision support, as have sensor networks to provide
for wide spatial coverage.  And while data acquisition is important,
processing and quality control of these data to create information and
knowledge through usable interfaces to the world is the final key
critical step in understanding the resource.  The vision is to
understand the ecosystem through high quality sensing and scenario modeling.
