Hi,

I recently returned from a coral reef research trip to Belize where we used the new Canon Powershot d20. This camera was phenomenal! It took excellent, high quality, color corrected photos with the ease of a point and shoot.. It has a macro function, fast shutter speeds, and GPS tagging. It can also shoot high definition video with sound.

The camera is waterproof to 30 ft without an external housing, but one is available for purchase should you need the extra depth. We also brought along a SeaLife camera, which very early in the trip was left aboard ship in favor of the smaller, more convenient, and high performance Canon.

Hope it helps! It also happens to be shock and freeze proof.

Hi Bill

I've been using the CANON IXUS (powershot) 980 + 900 back up since
2009. The back up is really for long research trips to remote
locations. With either set up you can get external lenses (INON) which
for me have been worth their weight in gold. My research is on
gorgonian corals within the Indo-Pacific and the wide angle attachment
is fantastic. The cameras can, if you push it, get ~2 cm away from the
object without an additional lens, nevertheless a macro lens is
available and works a treat, the fish eye is amazing too. You can get
amazing results with these little things, check out this site and ask
Qs, they are very helpful.

Hope that helps

I've just switched over to an Olympus TG1 iHS and am getting good pictures.

It has an F2 lense, GPS and is water proof out of the box, as is, to 40ft.

A waterproof housing (135 ft ), fisheye and teleconverter lenses are
available or will be available soon.

The outside dimensions are:

111.5mm W x 66.5mm H x 29.1mm D
4.4" W x 2.6" H x 1.1" D

Weight 230 g, 8.1 ounces

Specifications:

Greetings Coral Listers!

Does anyone have a pdf of the paper by Thompson and Munro (1978) Aspects of the biology and ecology of Caribbean reef fishes: Serranidae, in Journal of Fish Biology? My university library's subscription to JFB doesn't extend that far back.

Thanks in advance,

Isabelle Cote
