Dear Coral List subscribers,

could you please circulate this EOI to any outstanding students that
you feel have a strong interest and background in the Masters research
program outlined below?

Thanks

Steve

Southern Cross University (SCU) in collaboration with the Australian
Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) announces the opportunity for an
outstanding and enthusiastic student to undertake genetic research on
algal endosymbionts (Symbiodinium) of subtropical reef corals. Funding
has been secured to support a successful applicant to complete a
Masters research program, commencing about April 2012, to investigate
the Symbiodinium communities in subtropical scleractinian corals
throughout the 2010 and 2011 coral bleaching events.

The successful applicant will work as part of a multi-disciplinary
team, and have experience in genetic techniques including DNA
extraction from tissue, PCR, gel electrophoresis, and DNA sequencing,
with a strong background in quantitative analysis.

The Masters candidate will be located at the National Marine Science
Centre (NMSC) Coffs Harbour NSW. The position will involve travel to
the AIMS located near Townsville, QLD, to undertake genetic analyses.
Coral samples collected from Lord Howe Island during and subsequent to
the 2010 and 2011 bleaching events will be analysed at AIMS over a
period of 6 months. An opportunity for field sample collection may
also be available during candidature. For further enquires please
email Dr Steven Dalton (sdalton at nmsc.ecdu.au).
