Open Position - Resident Lecturer in Marine Resource Management (TCI)

On an annual basis, teach the Marine Resource Management course during two
semester programs and one-third of the two summer courses, Marine Protected
Areas. Lead designated components of the Center's Five-year Research Plan
and, as part of this, oversee, mentor, and grade the student directed
research projects related to these research lines.

Institutional Mission:

SFS creates transformative study abroad experiences through field-based
learning and research. Our educational programs explore the human and
ecological dimensions of the complex environmental problems faced by our
local partners, contributing to sustainable solutions in the places where we
live and work. The SFS community is part of a growing network of individuals
and institutions committed to environmental stewardship.

Program Focus:

SFS is working with the Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI) Department of
Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) and the National Park Service to
develop management strategies to help conserve marine biodiversity and
provide economic opportunities for island residents. With so many local
residents dependent upon marine resources for their livelihood, along with
increasing resource consumption by tourists, finding viable options for
managing fisheries and conserving critical habitats, including coral reefs,
is crucial.

Course Description:
The Marine Resource Management course provides students with the options and
consequences of how to manage natural systems in the context of human use,
development and degradation. It is intended to introduce the various
disciplines, tools, and information required to understand and manage
natural resources. It covers a wide range of disciplines, but is focused on
the management of fisheries resources in the TCI and the sustainable use of
lobster, conch and finfish. It will establish the link between the
complementary courses offered in the program, Environmental Policy and
Socioeconomic Values, and Tropical Marine Ecology. Topical areas include:
ecosystem analysis, anthropogenic impacts, regulation and enforcement,
conservation practices, coastal zone management, tropical marine resources,
tropical fisheries and fisheries management, parks and protected areas,
natural areas and development, tourism development and planning, and,
ultimately, human management techniques. The goal is to provide the tools to
manage natural systems for long-term sustainability.

The successful candidate will provide high quality, modern and experiential
teaching in critical environmental issues in an interdisciplinary curriculum
and participate fully in the implementation of the Center's five-year
research plan that addresses these issues. The publication of research
results is critical. The successful candidate will work closely with the
lecturers in Marine Ecology and Socioeconomics to deliver an
interdisciplinary program through education and research in a field setting.
Each lecturer is expected to provide high quality, inquiry-based teaching
and will lead students in Directed Research projects defined in the Center's
research plan.

Applicants are encouraged to review the course syllabi and programs
