Project for a MSc/MRes student or volunteer position in coral reef 
ecology at CRIOBE:

We are seeking a motivated graduate student or volunteer to conduct a 
research project on the physical and chemical microenvironments of 
competing corals and benthic algae at the CRIOBE (www.criobe.pf) in 
French Polynesia. The applicant will have the opportunity to acquire 
field and laboratory research skills in coral reef ecology and 
microbiology. He/she will conduct experiments to study the effects of 
benthic algae on the chemical and physical microenvironments around 
corals. The student will need to be already enrolled in a masters 
programme at another institution, but the proposed project may fill all 
of the student's requirement for research experience. Applications from 
motivated and qualified volunteers, not enrolled in a University, but 
interested in gaining more research experience, will also be considered.

Qualifications: Applicants MUST be certified SCUBA divers (CMAS** or 
PADI Advanced Open Water Diver) with at least 20 logged dives. 
Applicants should have a classroom/laboratory background in ecology and 
marine biology. Experience working on coral reefs and/or with 
microbiological techniques is preferred. Candidates should be physically 
fit, willing to work for long hours, comfortable working in and on 
water, fluent in English or French, and have good team and communication 
skills.

Duration of the project is flexible, with a maximum of 12 months. Field 
work in Moorea, French Polynesia will take place from September 1, 2013 
to February 28, 2014 and is compulsory. A preparation phase (July-August 
2013) in Perpignan (France) is recommended. All bench fees/ laboratory 
costs will be covered and a monthly stipend will be available. 
Applicants are required to pay for their own travel and diving insurance.
