Dear Colleagues,
It is interesting that the Coral List has focused lately on the need of scientific data or even anecdotal information from stakeholders (divers, fishermen) to be used for decision making. The Foundation ICRI Colombia in Pro of Coral Reefs, enhances the synthesis of scientific research findings, taking into account also local knowledge to improve coral reef management effectiveness. We have a campaign called Publications for Public Actions that relates to that objective. In cases where, there is not enough scientific background the Precautionary Principle should be considered as a guide for decision making. That is why for the question of the distance to which the divers should remain close to a coral colony, We recommend not allowing to sit on, stand on, or even touch live coral. Divers should rest by floating or standing on the sandy bottom. Establishing an ideal metric distance would not be feasible nor operational for enforcement. Environmental educations serves better the purpose of prevention direct impact on coral colonies. Cordial saludo,
Nohora Galvis Directora Ejecutiva
