The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s (FDEP) Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) currently has an opening for a position contracted through Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU): Fishing, Diving & Other Uses (FDOU) Coordinator.

Title: Fishing, Diving & Other Uses (FDOU) Coordinator
Salary Range: $38,000 - $39,400
Location: Miami, Florida

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Natural or Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or a related field and two (2) years of project/program planning, development and management, or public speaking experience; or Master's degree from an accredited institution in Natural or Environmental Sciences, Natural Resource Management, or a related degree. Scuba diving experience, including experience as a diver for marine science related field work. Nationally recognized scuba diver certification, and be able to complete the DEP Diver qualification within six (6) months of hire, which includes current medical approval for diving in accordance with DEP standard requirements. Experience operating a personal computer and proficient in Microsoft office (e.g. Word, Excel, and Outlook). Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications: Basic CPR/first aid and small boat handling and trailering experience. Experience with Microsoft Access and ArcGIS software.. Ability to document greater than 60 logged dives.
Anticipated Start Date: 01/20/2014
Other Information: This is a grant funded position with anticipated refunding. Although renewal of grant is expected, position is contingent upon renewal of grant.
General Summary Statement: This position's initial duties will include providing technical assistance; leading the planning and implementation of Local Action Strategy projects (LAS) identified in the Fishing, Diving, & Other Uses (FDOU) section of the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative (SEFCRI), including leading the SEFCRI Management Options Identification Process and related Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) activities and projects; as well as other duties as outlined in the official Position Description.

Scuba Diver Certification
1- With guidance from FDEP-CRCP Manager and Assistant Manager, provides technical assistance and leads the planning and implementation of LAS identified in the FDOU section of the SEFCRI and related CRCP activities and projects, including leading the SEFCRI Management Options Identification Process/Our Florida Reefs.
2- Works with the FDOU focus team and CRCP staff to identify and apply for funding for SEFCRI-FDOU projects. Works collaboratively with Florida Coral Reef Fisheries Biologist.
3- Develops scopes of work, budgets, proposals, and contracts for FDOU and related CRCP projects.
4- Analyzes data, develops and updates databases, prepares progress and financial reports, and facilitates annual review (and updates, as needed) of the FDOU LAS.
5- Dives and/or snorkels as needed. Additional duties and special projects as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of marine fisheries and coral reef ecosystems. Ability to identify the fisheries and reef fish species of Southeast Florida. Knowledge of common fishing, diving, and boating practices in Southeast Florida, particularly those that occur on or near coral reefs. Knowledge of current fishing regulations and state and federal management plans. Strong understanding of socioeconomic and conservation issues (e.g. marine protected areas) associated with fishing, diving, and boating. Knowledge of marine resource management tools and techniques, managed area public processes, and management plans. Familiarity with fishery monitoring programs and ability to interpret results from scientific assessments, reports, and publications.
Knowledge of and ability to operate a personal computer with proficiency in MS Office (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook and Access) and ArcGIS software. Excellent math and analytical skills. Excellent organizational and writing skills. Ability to multitask and meet tight deadlines. Ability to work independently and complete tasks with attention to detail under minimal supervision. Ability to communicate courteously with a diverse range of people. Excellent public speaking and meeting facilitation skills. Ability to maintain nationally recognized scuba diver certification including current medical approval for diving in accordance with DEP medical examination standard requirements.
