Post-doctoral research fellow, Marine Reserve Design, University of Queensland (Brisbane, Australia)

Applications are invited for an exciting research opportunity developing the theory of marine reserve networks to take account of climate change impacts, fisheries benefits, connectivity, biodiversity and social criteria. The project is targeting the global biodiversity hotspot known as the Coral Triangle, encompassing Indonesia, Philippines, and Malaysia. The project is a close partnership between the university and NGO sectors, meaning that research will lead to practical conservation benefits. Partners include: University of Queensland (Peter Mumby, Hugh Possingham and Cynthia Riginos), James Cook University (Geoff Jones), and Melbourne University (Eric Treml), World Wildlife Fund-Indonesia (Lida Pet), World Wildlife Fund-US (Helen Fox), and The Nature Conservancy (Alison Green, Alan White, Liz McLeod).

The post-doc will work for 3 years, based primarily in Brisbane but with extensive travel to the Coral Triangle (primarily Indonesia). Expertise is sought in the handling of data on larval dispersal (i.e. connectivity modelling), marine biodiversity, and marine reserve impacts. At least some computer programming experience is required.

The position is available for 3 years, commencing October 2013. The salary is ~A$72,000-75,000 pa (ca US$70,000 - $73,000) plus 28% benefits. International applicants are welcome to apply. This is an excellent opportunity for someone wishing to apply their science to real conservation problems and develop a productive relationship with NGOs. The successful applicant will be based at a world class university and work within a dynamic research environment with expertise across the fields of reef ecology, connectivity of fish populations, and conservation planning.

Please send expression of interest and CV to Professor Peter Mumby, p.j.mumby at uq.edu.au (www.marinespatialecologylab.org). Deadline for applications: 20th July 2013.
