Hi, everyone!

The May issue of the Ocean Health Index e-bulletin is just out. It
features a special blog by Professor Hideshige Takada of International
Pellet Watch on the unseen, difficult-to-trace pollutants that plastics
carry and spread; a look at the circus-like jumble of plastic and other
marine debris uncovered and recorded every year by Ocean Conservancy; an
in-depth look at how the Ocean Health Index scores the "Top 10" and "Bottom
10" countries for clean water; and a report on the new audience for films
on marine conservation in China.

We hope you enjoy!

Best

MICROPLASTICS AND THE THREAT TO OUR SEAFOOD

Old plastic never dies, it just fades away...into tiny little pieces called
"microplastics." Environmental organic geochemist Dr. Hideshige Takada
tells us how microplastics are ultimately recycled--right back into our
food web.

   weird finds in the ocean

You name it, it's been found. Cigarette butts, food wrappers and plastic
bottles--even the proverbial kitchen sink. Find out from Ocean
Conservancy's Nicholas Mallos what a day's worth of ocean trash tells us
about our global trash problem.

TOP TEN COUNTRIES FOR CLEAN WATER

Guess which country ranked #1 in Clean Water in the Ocean Health Index?
Hint: it's not Norway. Dr. Steven Katona, Managing Director of the Ocean
Health Index, examines the ten highest and ten lowest ranking countries to
investigate what factors help to explain the scores.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION! THE OCEAN HEALTH INDEX IN CHINA

For many centuries, China chose to isolate itself from the world, showing
little interest in the ocean and what lay beyond it. Now, a new generation
is flocking to see films on marine conservation-- and learning about the
Ocean Health Index itself.

Editor's Notes

SPOTLIGHT ON INTERNATIONAL PELLET WATCH

If you go to the beach this summer, collect pellets for International
Pellet Watch. Founded in 2005, this volunteer-based global monitoring
program is designed to track pollution in the oceans. To date, IPW has
mapped pellets from 50 countries all over the world.

SPOTLIGHT ON OCEAN CONSERVANCY

Ocean Conservancy is dedicated to educating and empowering citizens to take
action on behalf of the ocean. For the last 25 years, Ocean Conservancy has
organized an International Clean-Up Day, removing a total of 144,606,491
pounds of marine trash. Their data was used in the Ocean Health Index.
