Dear Mahiru

Welcome to Mahiru Foundation's newsletter of February 2014, which covers:

   - Featured Topic of the Month
   - Chlorophyll at glance
   - Some readership stats
   - Last date of submission nearing!

*Topic of the month: Vanishing Science*

When Ray Bradbury<http://weebly.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d1ce2e85157a723175bbd6742&id=ed967e27d8&e=19d604d250>wrote
'Fahrenheit
451<http://weebly.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d1ce2e85157a723175bbd6742&id=61a9baef7e&e=19d604d250>'
in 1953, he might not have imagined similar things can happen in real world
just in 6 decades, albeit with some different causes!

The original study:
http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2013.11.014<http://weebly.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d1ce2e85157a723175bbd6742&id=f39e45a502&e=19d604d250>

A recent study (link above; PDF/Supp. Info. - Available) reported
thatdata gets non-traceable (and/or accessible) at an alarming rate
after a
scientific paper is published. This should get easier to tackle in compare
to 60's, however the fact is not so. Often, technology change so rapidly
that physical existence of data doesn't prove to be of any use for further
study or validation.

This is so significant that the journal 'Nature' also took notice. As
Nature reports,

*"In their parents' attic, in boxes in the garage, or stored on now-defunct
floppy disks -- these are just some of the inaccessible places in which
scientists have admitted to keeping their old research data. Such practices
mean that data are being lost to science at a rapid rate, a study has now
found..."*

Moral of the story: Data handling and management is going to play a key
role for science in the upcoming years. This is also a heads-up for
scientists to assure their data is archived not only safely but in
easily-accessible and/or inter-compatible contemporary file formats and
hardware!
