Seeking Two Marine Assistants for the National Park of American Samoa

Overview
The National Park of American Samoa (NPSA) is currently seeking applicants
to fill two contract positions in the marine program. The purposes of the
positions are to perform biological science tasks related to marine
resources.

Duties
Primary duty will be to help control the current cown of thorn starfish
outbreak by poisoning individuals using SCUBA. Additional duties may
include tagging and tracking marine fish species, monitoring marine life
and water quality, maintenance and repair of boats and equipment, data
collection and entry into spreadsheets and databases, and other tasks as
assigned by the Marine Ecologist. SCUBA diving and boat driving are
expected to be regular duties but require passing the National Park Service
Blue Card Certification and Department of Interior Motor Boat Operator
Course, respectively.

Qualifications
Applicants must have prior SCUBA diving experience and be able to obtain
the NPS Blue Card diving certification. Applicants must be physically fit,
and able to pass a swim test that includes a 1,200 ft. swim without swim
aids completed within 15 minutes, a 75 ft. underwater swim without swim
aids, a surface dive to 10 ft. to recover an object without swim aids, and
treading water for 10 minutes without swim aids.

Previous boating experience is preferred. Knowledge of natural resource
management practices, methods, and procedures and marine data collecting
techniques will strengthen your application. Ability to maintain quality
control and quality assurance guidelines is important. Experience working
with Microsoft Work, Excel, and Access is preferred.

Requirements
Employment is contingent on passing the NPS Blue Card medical exam. This
position is a drug testing designated position subject to periodic and/or
random testing for illegal drug use.

You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as
part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle
operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if
management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an
affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid driver’s license that is
current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise
disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You
will also submit a photocopy of your valid driver’s license prior to your
first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more
frequently if management determines such need exists.

Compensation
Positions are contracted through American Conservation Experience. Pay is
$9.00 per hour depending on experience with no benefits. Positions are 40
hours/week for approximately a 6-month initial term, with the possibility
of extension depending on need and continued funding.

month/year and hours worked per week for each job experience.
2. Provide contact information (email and phone number) for three
references.
3. Submit a copy of your current driver’s license, and copies of any SCUBA
