Coral reef scientist Dr. Jeremy Jackson stresses the importance of fish
grazers in the Caribbean coral reef resilience at the 67th GCFI

November 14th, 2014. As a testimony of the relevance of scientific data to
raise awareness on the impact of some fishing practices on coral reefs in
the Caribbean, the SPAW/CaMPAM “Marine Protected Area Science and
Management” session of the 67th GCFI held last week in Barbados, included
“Restoring the resilience of Caribbean coral reefs” by Dr. Jeremy Jackson,
one of the most recognized coral reef scientists of our time.

Dr. Jackson is the science coordinator of the Global Coral Reef Monitoring
Network (GCRMN) and editor of the recently groundbreaking UNEP/IUCN report “
<mailto:https://portals.iucn.org/library/efiles/documents/2014-019.pdf>
Status and Trends of Caribbean Coral Reefs: 1970-2012”. His presentation
included some of the most important conclusions of this report: the impact
of the loss of reef grazers (such as parrot fishes) due to intensive fishing
and the need to stop this destructive practice to increase coral reef
resilience to the global effects of climate change. The paper and
discussions sustained during the meeting demonstrate the importance of
including fisher folks and fisheries officers in the process of restoring
one of the most important ecosystems services of the Caribbean sea: coastal
fisheries.

The UNEP-CEP/SPAW Programme, coordinator of this session as part of CaMPAM
Network and Forum activities, is also supporting the revitalization of coral
reef monitoring in the region within the GCRMN and through its SPAW Regional
Activity Centre in Guadeloupe. Others included in this effort are
ReefCheck-Dominican Republic, NOAA(SocMon), CERMES/UWI, CARMABI in Curacao,
INVEMAR in Colombia and the Waitt Foundation.
