Good point about temperature tolerance of corals in the Persian/Arabian
Gulf were made by Joerg Wiedenmann (Coral-List Digest Vol 73, Issue 12.
There was an even earlier reference to temperature tolerance in that
area. ( Kinsman D. J. J., 1964, Reef coral tolerance of high
temperatures and salinities: Nature, v. 202, p. 1280-1282). Most
staghorn corals in the Arabian gulf, however, did not survive the severe
freeze of Feb 1964. (Shinn, E.A., 1976, Coral reef recovery in Florida
and the Persian Gulf: Environmental Geology, v. 1, p. 241-254.) and many
succumbed to high temperatures during the world-wide EL Nino of 1998. Gene
