Dear coral reef enthusiast

I'm delighted to announce the publication of "Towards Reef Resilience and Sustainable Livelihoods: a handbook for Caribbean reef managers".

This book represents 5 years work by more than 50 researchers as part of the EU-funded project, FORCE (Future of Reefs in a Changing Environment). But the book is not a showcase for the project; an attempt has been made to synthesize much of the natural and social science that is relevant to managing reefs today. Managers from around the region contributed actively to the content and the way it was presented, which is intended to be as accessible as possible.

The range of topics covered is diverse and examples include: How to interpret coral reef monitoring data (when should you be concerned)? How can management accommodate climate change? How can we help people diversify their livelihoods? What can be done in practice to enhance resilience - and what is resilience anyway? How can we do a better job of managing reef fisheries? What is the present state of Caribbean reefs? How can we help people choose the future they want for the coastal zone?

Electronic copies in English and Spanish can be freely downloaded at the project website www.force-project.eu<http://www.force-project.eu>
Note, if you visit the site you'll also find links to new online GIS datasets for the entire Caribbean and a reef health simulator.

I'd like to thank all the colleagues and friends that contributed to making this product available and to all the managers who took the time to provide feedback and make suggestions.
